What is Literacy?

I specialized in early childhood education and loved first grade. To me, literacy is so much more than decoding letters.

Loving the sound of words begins long before children learn to read: "Knick-knack, patty-whack, give the dog a bone." The love of story begins before reading: Goldilocks, Popeye, Dumbo.

Reading broadens horizons. Reading fiction lifts humanity to a higher plane. Reading aloud tills the soil for greater happenings. Explore with me the benefits of reading aloud.
